Do you think e-cigarettes should be regulated by the FDA the same way all tobacco products are regulated?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With the health controversy growing by the day, the e-cigarette business is suddenly booming on Staten Island.

In fact, vapor lounges are popping up in vacant storefronts across the
borough as the number of varieties, flavors and brands skyrocket.

However, the movement is raising very vocal concerns among health care
professionals about the industry’s impact on recruiting a new generation
of young smokers.

For a borough that already has the highest number of smokers in New York
City — an estimated 58,000, which amounts to 16.5 percent of the
borough’s population — Staten Island is now home to armies of e-cig

E-cigarettes are battery-powered, tobacco-free devices that create an odorless, flavored vapor mist. The devices come with various levels of nicotine — similar to the nicotine patches — and some brands offer cartridges ranging from 24 milligrams to zero.

Health care professionals have warned about the dangers of e-cigarettes in the hands of children. If even a small amount is ingested by a child, liquid nicotine can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramping and increased heart rate, said Dr. Lee Cantrell, director of the San Diego Division of the California Poison Control System.

If a large amount is ingested, it can lead to convulsions and difficulty breathing, he added.

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) admits that further research is needed to assess the potential public health benefits and risks of electronic cigarettes, more regulation of their use is likely in the pipeline.

In fact, the FDA is working on a regulation “that would extend the agency’s
‘tobacco product’ authorities — which currently only apply to
cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, and smokeless
tobacco — to other categories of tobacco products that meet the
statutory definition of ‘tobacco product,'” said Jenny Haliski, an FDA
