More calls to poison control centers over ecigarettes – KCCI Des Moines

As the use of electronic cigarettes increases in popularity, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a new warning about the liquids containing nicotine inside the ecigarettes.

Officials said some adults and children are being poisoned by the liquid though ingestion, inhalation and even contact with the skin.

Great Alternatives owner Kelley Page said she feels better after switching to ecigs from a pack of cigarettes a day.

“For years when I went to sleep at night, I could not take a full breath into my lungs. I did not think twice about it because I was a heavy smoker. That’s what comes along with smoking,” said Page.

He warns his customers that ecigs can be poisonous if they aren’t used properly.

Dr. Doug Layton said ecigs don’t have the benefits everyone thinks. He said they’re so dangerous children can die from eating amounts of the liquid as small as a tablespoon.

“The big thing is it’s a stimulant. They’re going to be a little wired, kids are going to be irritable, have palpitations. They may get sweats if the dosing is high enough,” said Layton.

Layton said children are attracted to the bright colors and fruit flavors of the ecigs.

“They also don’t really have much safety packaging. They don’t have a child proof package. They’re very easily accessible and people tend to leave them out they don’t think of them as a danger,” said Layton.

While the ecigarettes don’t have child proof packaging, some of the bottles the liquids come in do.

In 2010, Poison Control Centers nationwide received just one call about poisoning involving ecigs. In February, they received 215 calls, and more than half were children under five.

“As far as kids getting into the liquid, I think its comparable to chewable vitamins. I think this is the same way you keep it out of reach you don’t let your kids get into it,” said Page.
