Letter: Vaping products are helping smokers kick the habit (Gazette) – Charleston Gazette-Mail

While the editorial board is right to cheer the declines seen in West Virginia’s smoking rate since 2011, it is time to actually acknowledge what product likely contributed the most to that fall — vaping products.

Recently published data from a longitudinal study conducted by the FDA found that, from 2013 to 2014, vaping products were not only the most-used cessation tool, other than cold turkey, but that smokers who tried to quit using vaping were more successful than using FDA-approved products like the nicotine patch and gum.

With the Royal College of Physicians estimating that vaping is at least 95 percent safer than smoking, there is a great need for leadership from health officials to correct rampant misperceptions about these products among the adult smokers who stand to benefit greatly from the use of these smoke-free products.
