E-cigarette batteries blamed for fire hazard – Record-Courier

MACEDONIA — Are folks who puff away on e-cigarettes any safer than their full-tobacco counterparts?

Researchers are still working to answer that question.

However, while e-cigarette smokers may be cutting down on potential carcinogens, there are other dangers e-cigarette or vape smokers are facing.

Recently an e-cigarette was not so healthy for a man driving through Macedonia.

On Nov. 17, just before 6 p.m., a Sagamore Hills man in his mid-50s was a driving through Macedonia Commons when the e-cigarette in his front pants pocket ignited.

“It started his pants on fire and burned him real bad,” said Macedonia Fire Chief Tim Black.

When firefighters arrived, the man had driven off the road in front of a local eatery.

“He was burned in the thigh area and hands, from trying to put out the fire,” Black said.

Black was not sure how the fire began except that the man said it began after his e-cigarette exploded.

“It was inside of his burning pants,” Black said. “We made sure it was put out. But our entire concentration
