Among the stash of items school resource officer Brad Osswald confiscated from Hamilton Heights High School students this year are three small Juuls.

They look harmless sitting next to an empty pint of Jack Daniels and a large vape, appearing more like a flash drive than a cigarette. One is decorated with a pink Marylin Monroe sticker. But the light-weight device that can be hidden in a student’s palm is just that — an e-cigarette that contains nicotine.

“This is the new, young, alternative way of smoking,” said Osswald, a deputy with the Hamilton County Sheriffs Department.
