HOBOKEN –Hoboken vape truck owner Joe Ruggiero will attend anger management and diversity training classes but will not lose his vendor’s license, under an agreement approved by the City Council on Wednesday night. 

Ruggiero came under scrutiny earlier this month after a smartphone video posted on YouTube showed him repeatedly shouting the phrase “(expletive) immy,” short for immigrant, at a Spanish-speaking delivery van driver on Washington Street. Ruggiero also shouted at the driver, “Trump, (expletive),” referring to President Donald J. Trump, who has taken a tough stance on immigration.

Two days after the May 6 incident, Mayor Dawn Zimmer released a statement condemning the public outburst of “hate speech,” and calling on the City Council to revoke Ruggiero’s license.

Councilmen Ravinder Bhalla and Ruben Ramos, both sons of immigrants, had originally planned a vote to revoke Ruggiero’s license on Wednesday night.

But talks between his lawyer, James Lisa, and Hoboken Corporation Counsel Brian Aloia yielded an agreement that would spare Ruggiero’s license and livelihood.
